Salaam alaikum,

Muslim convert in America here. Medical decisions that parents make now (not just provision of information) can have an effect on a girl's future life.

My former wife and I were presented with a choice by my former step-daughter's doctor whether she should have a vaccination for gential warts, or HPV, which is primarily contracted through sexual activity. The vaccine is now recommended for all girls ages 11-12 in America. Genital warts are a major risk factor in cervical cancer, which kills many women who get this diagnosis.

Some conservative Christians have objected to giving girls the vaccination. They say protecting young women from the threat of a sexual disease encourages immorality. I have never heard any Imam or Muslim scholar pronounce on this, but I can imagine that there are conservative Muslims who would feel teh same way.

I'm happy and proud that we made the decision to vaccinate our daughter. Even if she lives a life of strident morality, who is to say that her future husband has? Muslims sin and return to god the same as everybody else. But maybe they come back with a disease. It's morally encumbent upon parents to provide this protection for their children.
